Copland / Music for a Great City (Copland, cond.)
Aaron Copland (1900-1990)
Music for a Great City, for orchestra (1963-64)
00:00 - Skyline
07:48 - Night Thoughts
15:18 - Subway Jam
18:45 - Toward the Bridge
Boston Symphony Orchestra, dir. Aaron Copland (broadcast performance of 10 April 1965)
"Music for a Great City was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra in celebration of its sixtieth anniversary season, and is dedicated to the members of the orchestra. The music was first performed in London's Festival Hall on May 26, 1964, the composer conducting. It was introduced to the United States when the London Symphony Orchestra performed it in Washington, D.C., on October 13, 1964.
Aaron Copland has explained the origin of this music as follows: 'I began to work on the score during the latter part of 1963, completing it in April of 1964. The musical materials are derived in part from a film score I composed in 1961. Starring Miss Carroll Baker and directed by Jack Garfine, the script was based on a novel by Alex Carmel called "Mary-Ann." The picture was released for distribution in December 1961 under the title "Something Wild." The action of the story takes place in New York where all of the film was shot. Indoor scenes of tense personal drama are interspersed with the realistic sights and sounds of a great metropolis.
'The nature of the music in the film seemed to me to justify extended concert treatment. No attempt was made to follow the cinematic action. The four movements of the work alternate between evocations of big city life with its external stimuli, and the more personal reactions of any sensitive nature to the varied experiences associated with urban living. Music for a Great City reflects both these aspects of the contemporary scene.'" - John N. Burk

Moving beyond words. The final cadence is shattering.
I like that portrait of dogs! 🐶
Haydonia a Great Alchemist of the Symphony, and the soul
Sturm und Drang, as it applies to 18th century music, is much more than minor keys and tremolos, sudden changes in dynamics, and irregular phrasing. This attempt to categorize music with certain characteristics into neat little boxes in order to pacify small minds sets my teeth on edge!
One of my Favorite Mozart movements...well played!
Fabulous recording! Thank you maestro Jacobs.
It's a good performance and the recording quality is good. This is the first time I've heard a performance conducted by Koussevitzky. He's a great conductor. I feel that Concerto for Orchestra is skillfully composed so that it will be a good performance when performed by a good orchestra. However, it would be an insult to the composer to say that it is Bartok's best work.
So why would they make a music piece like this for almost an hour? Or is grouping all of these actually necessary? These are standalone pieces, the breaks in the music I mean. It's almost like this is an album and all of these different pieces are the songs on it.
MAGYAR 😊
Amazing symphony, but having said that Mozarts influence is so apparent😊 young Schubert must have adored Mozart and unconsciously must have incorporated his styles and flicks.
Kuijken and Haydn is a great combination!
Comfort of Mozart’s music is off the charts
Nobody comes close to Kubelik where this piece is concerned.

Adagio most sublime
As a vegetarian and horn player, im glad they gave their prey such a heads up😂
Utter delight!
Wonderful. So beautiful. Thank you!
No balls in sight.
a true gem by the genius
So many interminable ads! Completely unwatchable! Give it a miss guys, unless you like Mozart's divine music together with ridiculous ads.
Absolutely wonderful, and one of the few recent period recordings with the horns playing basso, (the lower octave) which is, in my opinion, entirely correct. Haydn did not say "H hoch" as he would have had he wanted it high.
Sublime music, spoilt by the interminable ads.
Escuchando esta magnífica obra y mirando la ilustración del video..... imagino ese hombre mirando el bravo mar ....noche y el castillo cerrado....pero parece tranquilo el hombre 💐
i wished Harnoncourt recorded all of Haydn's symphonies, he understands the unique character of each of them, and gives them congenial performances.
There is a film online of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the Vienna Philharmonic and Lang Lang recording two Mozart concertos. During the filming a member of the orchestra (it may have been the concertmaster) said, with a mixture of great admiration and reverence, "Whenever Nikolaus Harnoncourt comes here we learn something."

Magnificent 🥰🎉
the opening chorus is one of musics miracles.
Great, masterly -- a perf. that does justice to the piece. My only complaint being tempi in the Romanze. For me the Adagio sounds just slightly too slow, more like a Largo, and the Allegretto sounds at least like an Allegro. But on the other hand the two minuet movts. are perfect: the 2nd somewhat faster than the first.
in my ensemble of 13yos it sounds like a fire alert
